Theme Wanted for September Celebrations

It may be the first day of June, but in some parts people are already thinking of September – more specifically, the September Celebrations, which are now just three months away. Belizeans will be commemorating the two hundred and twentieth anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye and the thirty-seventh anniversary of independence. On Thursday, the National Institute of Culture and History announced its annual competition to select a theme for the festivities. Encapsulate the spirit of September in ten words or less, and you’ll get a thousand dollars to spend for Carnival, Expo Belize and many of the other activities being held countrywide. We spoke to Shary Medina, NICH’s Associate Director for Communications, Business Development and Marketing.

“Be creative, think about September Celebrations, what it should be about, and how we can all fit together as a nation to celebrate these big anniversaries that we do every year.”

Aaron Humes

“I’ve mentioned to you that most of the themes, like last year’s, tend to follow some sort of a formula. You start with some sort of problem or challenge, then move to a solution and end with something like a message of hope. Does that get formulaic after a while?”

Shary Medina

“I believe that there is so many things you want to say in a theme, and what people normally do is they try to condense all their ideas in one, so by putting these little pieces together, when they come up the problem and then the solution, and then something that would remain with us, for us to remember always, is something that people would normally do to make sure that we keep, like I mentioned before, everything that they want to say in a nutshell.”

Multiple entries are allowed and the winner will receive the cash prize and an invitation to the official ceremonies during September. Submissions can be emailed to: or dropped off at NICH office on Regent Street, the Bliss Center for Performing Arts on Southern  Foreshore in Belize City or at any of the offices of the districts of the Town Councils. Deadline for submission is Friday June twenty-second.
