S.S.B. Marks 37 Years, Meets Employers

The Social Security Board celebrated its thirty-seventh anniversary today, having opened its doors to the Belizean public on June first, 1981.  In honor, of this occasion an open day was held at each of the S.S.B.’s branch offices across the country.  The focus today was on promoting an upcoming transition to what is known as a direct deposit system.  No longer will customers have to wait in line to pick up checks.  Instead, payments and contributions will be made online.  News Five spoke with Shavon Samuels of the Belize City office earlier today.

“This is our thirty-seventh anniversary and we felt that it was a good time for us to advertise our direct deposit.  This direct deposit being that all benefits that our insured person receives will be deposited into a bank account, as opposed to depositing a check that we normally do.  Effective October first, it will become mandatory so we are starting to let the customers know what is the plan so that they can prepare better for when October first comes, the transition would be very smooth.”

“What is the reason behind moving in this particular direction to where the S.S.B. will no longer be cutting cheques and will now be moving towards direct deposits and an automated system?”

Shavon Samuels

“It’s faster, it’s easier.  Presently, we have numerous cheques at our office that insured persons have not come in to pick up.  At the end of a six-month period we would normally cancel those benefits.  I believe this would also help the employers so that they can keep track of the payments.”

“Now I understand that there was an employer’s gathering this morning to discuss certain aspects of either the work that the S.S.B. does or certain information that is necessary for employers to understand about the work of S.S.B.”

Shavon Samuels

“Yes, we had an employer’s forum this morning whereby we also informed them about the direct deposit that is taking place and we also informed them about our online portal payments.  Instead of coming into our office to access payments, they can access this portal online which is available twenty-four hours.  It will also help them to eliminate the errors that are presently being made on the system or on the statement for example: the invalid rates, the wrong social security number because the portal will be able to check these documents and if it’s not correct then the payment will not go through.”
