A Plan for Biodiversity

The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Belize was officially launched in San Ignacio on Thursday. Two decades ago, Belize was one of many countries that signed on to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, committing to the proper management and sustainable use of natural resources. This commitment involved the development of national plans in conservation.  Minister of State of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry and Climate Change, Omar Figueroa says that NBSAP is the result of years of work and consultations with partner agencies.

“The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is Belize’s principal instrument for executing our natural resource management actions. Our commitment to develop and implement the NBSAP sends a clear signal of the importance our government places on our natural capital. The NBSAP is a result of years of work and was prepared through many consultations with all our partners. It highlights Belize’s vision, goals and targets for the biodiversity we are blessed with. And it also provides us with a blueprint for mainstreaming and integrating conservation planning and responsible use into our national plans. We recognize that Belize’s natural resources are critical to the health of its economy and to the wellbeing of its population. We also recognize that our main economic activities including tourism, agriculture, forestry and fisheries are strongly linked to the country’s natural resource base, which constitutes the strength of our country’s economy.”
