Cycling Federation Elections Postponed; Team Heads to Mexico

Tariq Cano

There has been an interesting turn of events within the cycling community, ahead of what would have been elections for a new executive of the Cycling Federation of Belize this weekend.  News Five understands that the date for those elections has been moved to May twelfth, to allow for an open process which will see the incumbent administration being challenged by a new slate of candidates.  The federation and those within its ranks that have been involved in a recent logjam over eligibility to contest the available seats, have been tightlipped on the latest developments, as they are reportedly bound by confidentiality through ongoing mediation.  In other cycling news, a delegation of athletes is preparing to represent Belize at an upcoming event in Merida.  That team of riders is being led by Tariq Cano.

Tariq Cano, Cyclist

“On June fourteenth they have the MZ tour of Merida, it’s actually one of the biggest races in Central America at this point and in Mexico and we’re trying to put a team together of nine Belizean cyclists, elite and two female riders to go and compete.  We’re trying to raise funds to do so as well.  Last year we took a mixed team of Guatemalans, Costa Ricans, Mexicans and Belizeans, but we had international sponsors, so it was a bit different.  This year now we’re trying to incorporate only Belizean athletes so we’re seeking help from the Belizean public in the cost that we have to fundraise over ten thousand, four hundred dollars for hotel costs, registration, travel and for food and extra expenses.  We’re trying to reach out to the public to give back and donate, you know, we’re selling slots on our jerseys as well.  With all of this we’re hoping to help promote Belizean cycling internationally as well.”
