AG Wants You to Register & Vote

Michael Peyrefitte

During our coverage of the referendum in Guatemala, you’ve heard a number of voices weigh in on Guatemala’s “Yes” vote to go to the ICJ on the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute.  Today, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte was asked for his view on the matter. While he said he wouldn’t comment directly on the Guatemalan results, he will say that Belize’s own referendum will take place after the re-registration is complete and that is set to start on July first. The AG says he hopes that Belizeans will register and that they will participate in the referendum process when the time comes.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“We had an arrangement with the Guatemalans that now we go to our referendum and the people of Belize will get to decide if they want to go to the ICJ or not but that is a matter for the people of Belize. I think the Government has taken the position, a responsible position, to say look this is the position of the government we would like to see this matter settled legally in the ICJ but I think even the government is cheery of pushing for it too hard or holding back on it too hard. We do not want to be accused of trying to force a vote on anybody. That is a matter that is too important. We are responsible for setting out the landscape leading up to the referendum a re-registration process will take place starting the first of July. Everybody, you are encouraged not just for the referendum, but in general, register to vote. Because unlike Guatemala, it would be refreshing for Belizeans, to me, to come out in great numbers and just vote on an issue that has to do with our very existence as a country. Whatever the result of that vote is, the government will accept that fully and move on from there.”
