Addressing Corruption at Recent Summit of the Americas

Michael Peyrefitte

Last week a Belizean contingent attended the Eighth Summit of the Americas in Peru. Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington, Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte and Belize’s Ambassador to the U.S. and O.A.S. Daniel Gutierrez represented Belize. Today, the A.G. told us about the discussions at the summit and the focus on democratic governance against corruption.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“Essentially, those summits are designed to have governments present their situations at as it relates to the themes for that year. This year had to deal with corruption in government and so all the countries who were present gave their presentations as to how they deal with corruption, what are the different tactics and measures and different styles of operating and dealing with it. We try to learn from each other. We try to have bilateral discussions in the margins of the meeting so that we can learn different tools of the trade – this how you battle this problem or this is how you battle that problem. The thing with Belize is, whenever we go there or when we go to these conferences, we always hear people celebrating well they are about to set up an integrity commission, or they are about to celebrate something groundbreaking – an ombudsman, a contractor general. Well, what are you doing Belize? Well, we have had those in place for years now. So, in terms of laws, we have excellent laws on the books.”
