Miguel Diaz-Canel, the New President of Cuba

Miguel Diaz-Canel

Miguel Diaz-Canel was officially named as the new President of Cuba today, one day after a secret vote in that country’s National Assembly. Diaz-Canel, who turns fifty-eight on Friday, has been in the government for thirty years and was selected by a vote of six hundred and three to one to replace Fidel Castro’s younger brother Raul, who stepped down as president at the age of eighty-six. The election of Diaz-Canel brings an end to the Castro rule on the island, though Raul remains as the powerful leader of the Communist Party. The Castros were at the head of government since the revolution in 1959. Today, Diaz Canel gave his first address as the new president of Cuba.

Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba [Translated]

“The most important thing is not how much we resemble our own people. What we cannot forget is the commitment we made with the people and our future. All representatives, directors of the General Assembly and members of the Ministerial Councils, we have as our first objective to be the systematic link to the people. This obligates us to deepen our analysis of the problems that affect our society as a whole and the daily life of Cubans, stimulating a sincere and ample debate about them and encouraging all possible means of solving and diminishing their impact with the participation of those involved, whether affected or because there is a possibility to solve them.”
