Trio Including Belizeans Held for Out-of-Season Lobster in Guatemala

We regularly report on nationals of Guatemala and Honduras caught in Belizean waters with illegally captured produce, but rarely in the other direction. But according to Guatemalan media reports, on Tuesday morning three men were picked up by Guatemalan military personnel near Livingston. Prensa Libre reports that radar on the Guatemalan side warned of a vessel in their waters about a nautical mile away near the mouth of the Sarstoon River. Two of the men are said to be Belizeans, Iginio Canto Bacab and Julio Rodríguez Blanco, and the third a Guatemalan, Alejandro Rodríguez Ortega, who were picked up with a large amount of lobster in coolers. Lobster is now in closed season. The following is a report from the press officer of the Guatemalan Armed Forces given to a local TV station.

Oscar Perez, Press Director, Guatemalan Defence Ministry

“At the naval station in Livingston, Guatemala, known as the naval command of the Caribbean, various operational activities routinely take place. At this occasion, at a mile from Livingston, about eleven p.m. [Monday], a boat was intercepted. In this boat, which is of foreign origin, there were three undocumented individuals. Upon conducting a search of the vessel, the naval authorities found a cargo containing lobster, which is out of season at the moment. The authorities then proceeded to take the men to the port harbor, where further legal procedures took place with the participation of other correspondent civil authorities. This special patrol took place due to radar alert in the area, which is being monitored for illegal activity. This is the information we have at the moment; the police and fishing authorities are presently doing their investigations.”

“Colonel, you mentioned they are documented. Apparently they are from Belize; is that so?”

Oscar Perez

“That will be determined after the authorities of the Public Ministry have identified them. What I can confirm is that they are undocumented.”
