City Cops Get New Booths in Patrol Areas

Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett is at it again. This afternoon the Eastern Division South Regional Commander was at the corner of West Canal and Rocky Road in south side Belize City where a new police booth was installed at the location following requests made by officers and a resident on harsh weather conditions officers endure when working the area. Through partnership with Triple L Construction Supplies out of Ladyville and Brothers Habet Limited, the department installed the first of three booths as part of its ongoing community policing initiatives.

“We are very happy for this request. It’s been a while now we have been asking because when it rains, the officers get wet so we are very grateful for this. Thanks to Mister Broaster and Mister that get this and make this happen.”

“How many officers usually are in this area?”

“Every shift we have three officers. First it was two police officers and since the B.D.F. join up with them it is three—two B.D.F. and one police.”

“Lately you guys have seen the news; we have so many innocent people getting hurt, especially kids, so we decided to donate this security booth for the police officers especially with all the rainy season coming so it is going to help them a lot.”

“I was quite impressed by what I was hearing and we touched base shortly afterwards about some stuff in the area of where we are on Barrack Road and he was very proactive to let us know what he is looking for and I was surprised to find that one of the things was basically the well-being of the officers, which honestly me, like a lot of other citizens, we don’t stop to think about the position these guys are in all the time. This booth is actually right down from where I work and I never really stop and think that maybe these guys can get rained on. What he wants to do is preserve these guys dignity and I can respect that.”

“On the first week, we went around and spoke to the officers working at the different check points and one of their concerns was the tent; when it rains they get wet regardless of what time of the night it is. When the sun is out, the same they are affected by it. And recently, there was some high breeze in Belize City over the weekend and this tent was blown away and leaving police in the elements. So we as leaders have to show that we care but we cannot do it alone. We had to go with some partnership and I mentioned it on a TV station that we needed to change the tents to booths.”
