Ambassador Rosado Confirms Re-Registration Must Come First

Alexis Rosado

Vice President of Guatemala Jafeth Cabrera voted in Sunday’s referendum in Guatemala City. According to Prensa Libre, he told reporters that he understands Belize will go to vote in its referendum in May of 2018, though he possibly meant 2019. Either way, he maintained that Belize has already committed to the path and now it is up to citizens to provide a definitive answer. But in Belize’s case, Ambassador Alexis Rosado reiterated that any such answer by Belizeans must and will come after Belize’s voter rolls are purged through the long-awaited re-registration set to take place in July.

Alexis Rosado, Ambassador of Belize to Guatemala

“There has to be a misunderstanding. What is bound to start next month is the re-registration exercise which was already sated to start this year. That will take a few months. That has always been clear. I don’t understand where the mix-up came from. We have always been very clear that our referendum will take place only after the re-registration exercise has been complete enough to give us a new electoral roll.”

Marleni Cuellar

“Realistically speaking, from the government’s perspective, what would be the right timeline when Belizeans can anticipate going to the polls for our referendum?”

Alexis Rosado

“It would have the re-registration exercise. When that will be complete we will; have to as Ms. Tamai – I suppose who will be in charge of that.”
