Who Wanted Jason Belencio Dead?

Jason Belencio

A father of three was killed in Belize City on Sunday evening. Police say that they have one man in custody and are looking for another – but the motive of the killing has stumped his family. They say that Jason Belencio is a family man, but he was callously taken out with five shots to the head and back. Police and the family say that Belencio is not connected to the gangs and neither has he had any run-ins with the law. While some speculate that his murder may be connected to Marcia Downs’ killing which happened last Wednesday – again, police and the family say there is nothing to support that rumor. But someone wanted him dead on Sunday – and they killed him as he walked in the neighborhood where he grew up. Andrea Polanco has more in the following story.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Thirty-year-old Jason Belencio was brutally killed when he was shot five times as he walked on Lovely Lane in Belize on Sunday evening around six o’clock. He was shot three times in the head and two times in the back. He had just left the gambling shop down the street and was heading to his mother-in-law’s house which is just a stone’s throw away, but his killer met him on the way. A motive is yet to be established for this murder.

Therese Leiva, Mother-in-law of Murder Victim

“Why? Why deh wah kill ah? He nuh do nobody nothing. He is not gang related. All he likes is gambling. He is a loving father figure. I see my daughter by the scene – it was bloody. He was coming to my house. Five shots he get because I see it. Five shots my son-in-law get. They shouldn’t kill ah like that. I think they just jealous and hate. He used to gamble and when he mek his lee money and thing, he share with everybody because he dah wah loving person. When somebody get shot around there or anything, he say he nuh do anybody nothing so nobody nuh wah kill ah. He could walk anywhere. He could walk from north to south, east to west because he neva do anybody anything.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he never feared for his life?”

Therese Leiva

Therese Leiva

“No. The bad part is he born and grow around Lovely Lane and dah right round deh they killed him. Why? He born and grow all his thirty years around there. Why? He born and dead round there – come on, mien.”

From all accounts he was never involved nor affiliated with gang activities in the city.Speculations were rife that perhaps Belencio’s murder is connected to Marcia Downs’ which happened on Wednesday night.  We asked police and his family – they flatly denied this angle. One man is detained at this time and police are looking for another.

Andrea Polanco

“Is he connected to any of the gangs in the city?”

Wilfredo Ferrufino

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, C.I.B., Belize City

“Not that we know of. I know he lives on Barrack Road. There is no information to suggest that he is a part of any gang. He is not known to police.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, is anything in your investigation pointing to his murder and the murder of Marcia Downs?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No. There is nothing to indicate that at this time?”

Andrea Polanco

“Did he know who killed Marcia?”

Therese Leiva

“He nuh know nothing about that. I want people to stop these talking because nothing nuh go so. All he is into is his three children. He is into his family. H loves his family. He nuh know nothing bout no murder. He nuh know nothing.”

We note that there is a police check-point in the vicinity. Reports were circulating that there weren’t any cops stationed at the check-point at the time of the murder.  Leiva says she believes people in the area saw who killed her son-in-law. And now she says she an innocent man is dead.

Therese Leiva

“He very close to his children. He is close to his common-law. Everywhere you see him, you see he and the three pickney dem and his wife. He mind them. He tek care ah his children deh.”

Leiva made an appeal to the public to put down the guns in light of her son-in-law’s homicide.

Therese Leiva

“I want to ask, please stop the violence. Because you have mothers dying, fathers dying and they have children out there. Now my three grandchildren nuh have no father. None at all. None.”
