P.U.P. Says Mayor Wagner Can Be Available, but Prudent

Bernard Wagner

Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner has been facing serious criticism since deciding to lend financial assistance to needy residents via a social program at City Hall.  Despite having cleared up the issue of endorsing checks to himself, many have questioned the sustainability of the mayor providing handouts to the less fortunate during a weekly clinic at his office.  Earlier today, we spoke with P.U.P. Party Leader John Briceño, who says that he commends Mayor Wagner’s initiative to reach out to the disadvantaged.

“I believe that we are public servants and we must make ourselves available to meet the public of whom we serve.  In Orange Walk Central, people go to my house every single day when they want to meet with me and then I will have again a system in place, send them to my office and so forth and so forth.  So I commend the mayor that he is prepared to meet with the citizens of this city.  But people don’t come to see you only because they want money.  There are many other reasons, they want advice, they want a letter, they want you to help them in many different ways as opposed to money.  So it’s not when you see all these people coming to you, it doesn’t mean that they all want money.  Now when it comes to the issue of the sustainability or what it is that you can afford, it is like with anybody, everybody, a national government, a local government, or even you Isani, have to work with a budget and I think that in this case the Belize City Council, I imagine that probably they have done it, I don’t know yet, I don’t know if they’ve done it already but I guess they would; they would have to sit down as a council and decide what is it that they can do and what is it that they can afford to be able to give any kind of assistance through the city council.  I think what is important is that here we have our mayor, unlike the previous U.D.P. mayors who did not make themselves available to the citizens of this city, to the people who really don’t have access, those that they don’t know anybody else and here we have our mayor, Mayor Bernard Wagner and I congratulate him for him to decide that he wants to do this.”
