Ladyville Shocked by Deaths of Well-Known Citizens

The shocking double murder of Mark Sewell and Gabriel Escalante has devastated two families but the close knit Ladyville Community is also in mourning. The two men were described as friendly and easy-going productive members of the village. Two friends of the deceased told us that the killings have left the residents shaken and grieving because two positive and hardworking residents were senselessly killed.

“First of all when I heard the news, it was very shocking to me because I know Gabriel from we dah little boys growing up here in Ladyville. We dah friends from that time. From we born in and grow here – fi long time. So it was very shocking to me. It’s very, very shocking. I couldn’t believe it, nuh.”

“From what I understand, he is a very hardworking fisherman?”

“Yes. He is a fisherman. He works very hard for his family. Gabriel is the breadwinner of his house. His children depend on him. His wife depends on him. He works hard. He goes to the sea everyday to try and make money for his family.”

“He has been working out at this Caye Lagos for a while now?”

“Yes. He has been working out there for many years now. Yes. Very good friends everybody here in Ladyville knows them.”

“What’s the reaction of Ladyville residents right now – knowing that two residents were killed?”

“At present, Ladyville is mourning because we have lost two very good Ladyville citizens, two good Ladyville residents. It is so sad, so shocking because we never believed we would have gotten this news. At present, Ladyville is grieving right now because we have lost two very, very good Ladyville citizens – two very good Ladyville residents. I would also like to say that it is so sad. It’s so shocking. We would have never believed that we would have gotten this news.”

“I was home when the boss called him to go out there.”

“That was Wednesday and that was the last I heard of him, until today.”

“He neva have problems with anybody, as far as you know?”

“No. Nobody. Nobody.  Dah man nuh got no problem with nobody, absolutely nobody. He mi wah di sit down out yah right now and drink and after he get enough he go home with his family. Dah man nuh got wa absolute problem with nobody.”

 

Mark Sewell was the caretaker at Caye Lagos; he is not to be confused with the notorious Mark Sewell, who beat an extradition request by the U.S. government a year ago.
