Senior Citizen Thought to Have Killed Self in Maskall

Augustine Smith

A senior citizen was found dead this morning inside his house in Saint Ann Village on the Maskall Road. Neighbours visited Augustine Smith’s house and found him with his face blasted open, apparently from a bullet of his shot gun. A note was discovered on the scene with a short message. Family and friends believe that Smith took his life, though a post-mortem is pending and an investigation is ongoing. News Five’s Andrea Polanco spoke with Smith’s brother today about the incident.

Did seventy-five-year-old Augustine Smith of Saint Ann Village kill himself? That is what his family and neighbors think. Smith was discovered with a bullet through his face and a sixteen gauge shot gun between his legs.  A note was also discovered inside the house in which Smith reportedly wrote to his family telling them that he knew suicide was wrong but he had to do it. Smith’s brother, Morris Bainton, says that he heard a single shot around five this morning. But he didn’t know that was his brother who had fired that shot and taken his own life.

Morris Bainton, Brother

“Coming from my door, going to the road, then I hear bang like a shot. I neva pay it no mind because I know that his gun mi left across here because he was in hospital. So, I neva pay it no mind.   Until when I get back and get off the bus, then I sight the police vehicle and thing and then I realize weh happen.”

Andrea Polanco

“Yuh neva expect you would come and find your bredda dead?”

Morris Bainton

Morris Bainton

“None at all. None at all.”

Smith lived alone at his house. His son says that the family would visit often – just Tuesday they saw him and he was doing well.  He was hospitalized for about two weeks and recently released.  Smith’s son says he has no clear idea why his father took his life. But in a conversation with his brother he may have hinted at a reason.

Andrea Polanco

“People suspect that he killed himself; do you think he would do something like that?”

Morris Bainton

“Well sometimes he say he nuh wah give nobody no problems, no worries. I never did expect or think about it this way.”

Andrea Polanco

“That he would take his own life because he didn’t want to burden anyone?”

Morris Bainton

“Right. I neva believe it because we talked so nice last night.  It surprised me, it really surprised me.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, perhaps he may have been suffering in silent and didn’t want to tell anyone?”

Morris Bainton

“Well, he was a hard guy whenever you visit, he di blow short and we tell ah bwai go and check with your doctor.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he was sickly? He was ailing?”

Morris Bainton

“Yes. Yes. He was ailing. He keeps his things to himself because he was a hard man. He didn’t want to hear about doctor and them thing deh. And when he do gone, he gone dah the clinic and deh send ah cross dah the hospital and deh admit ah.”

Andrea Polanco

“He was there for about two weeks, nuh?”

Morris Bainton

“Yes. Two weeks he mi deh in deh; fteen days he deh in deh.”

Bainton says that despite the tragic way Smith died, he will be fondly remembered in the village.

Morris Bainton

“We all keep one another happy right round yah. Nuh mind he have some time and you wah hail and like he nuh would ah hear yuh and thing, then you would say his head deh pahn ah. But apart from that, he was always a jolly man.”

We are told that police are investigating the alleged note. It is yet to be determined if Smith wrote the letter because there may be a discrepancy with his signature. We note that while the family believes it is suicide, a post-mortem is yet to determine cause of death and police are still investigating this death. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
