City Administrator Suspended: Is Mayor Wagner on a Witch Hunt?

Candice Miller

City Administrator Candice Miller has been suspended from managerial duties until sometime in early May, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into questionable debts left behind by the former Belize City Council.  Those arrears include a hefty tab owed to a Chinese restaurant situated across the street from City Hall, where Joe Bradley, father of former Mayor Darrell Bradley, ran up a bill of six thousand dollars.  Similarly, Miller’s signature reportedly appears on dubious transactions involving payments made out to colleagues of other councilors.  But is the new mayor embarking upon a witch hunt?  Wagner says it is not a systematic campaign being directed against dissenters at City Hall.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

“On the matter of administrator, that matter is still ongoing and as soon as we are able to get some feedback on how we stand with that, I will be able to provide you with more concrete results on that matter.”

Reporter

“Sir, with respect to the city administrator, has the investigation revealed any other alarming transactions or information?”

Bernard Wagner

Bernard Wagner

“Again, at this point I wouldn’t want to disclose anything, but we are working on all those events and we will, as soon as possible, be able to provide the media with some of the findings that we came across.”

Isani Cayetano

“How do you respond any criticism out there that this is a delicate situation you’ve found yourself in as an incoming mayor to avoid what can be perceived as a witch hunt, given the fact that most of what you’d be unearthing has happened in the previous administration when we’re looking at moving forward.  How do you balance that?”

Bernard Wagner

“Yeah, it’s a day-to-day balance Isani.  We came in, I could still recall the first day we came in we gave this council and we gave the employees, we extended and arm to them and we gave them this olive branch of let us work together.  We have had many instances where information, where undermining has occurred and clearly this can’t be left to continue.  Obviously something will have to give and I will leave it at that.”

Reporter

“Sir has any evidence been collected or identified that may lead to the city administrator’s termination, Evidence that she cannot challenge if she’s terminated?”

Bernard Wagner

“Again, like I have mentioned, the city administrator’s matter is a matter, a delicate matter.  We continue to work to see with the council how best we [can] address it.  Clearly the evidence continues to mount and we will leave it at that and get back to you when we reach that [point].”

Just prior to the elections, Miller was given extended four-year contract with a significant raise and allowances, even though her current contract would have expired in November of this year.
