Investigation Continues into Alleged Case of Police Brutality in PG

Leray Simon

An internal investigation is ongoing by the Professional Standards Branch against officers attached to the Punta Gorda precinct over allegations of police brutality. Leray Simon claims that he was viciously beaten in the cell block on Sunday night after he was detained by police while socializing with his football teammates following a match in the south. He was taken to the station where he was attacked by several officers; Simon ended up with an injury to the cheek and over the right eye. But the police also claim that Simon was detained because he had reportedly kidnapped his son from a female police officer and while he was detained he became violent.  The regional southern commander reportedly intervened and a medico form was issued to the victim of alleged police brutality. Simon recounted what happened on Sunday night.

Leray Simon, Claims Police Brutality

“I was playing my game Sunday and after the game, I was socializing with some of my teammates and police came, crashed us up and took us, well me. I was handcuffed, beat up me, gun butt me, chip my teeth, locked me in a cell, and didn’t want to take a statement from me or anything. This morning they let me go, so I came down here to try and get assistance up this side. It’s the same thing over this side here too.”

“Did the police give you any reason as to why they were taking you in? Did they give you any reason?”

Leray Simon

“No because they see a group of guys socializing and drinking after a victory. They just detained me out of all the guys and ker me in, handcuffed me and they started beating me when they reached the station.”
