Belize Seeks New Markets as E.U. Maintains Contract

While prices for their sugar are out of the farmers’ and ASR/B.S.I.’s control, Belize still retains a working relationship with Tate and Lyle of the United Kingdom, which continues to sell Belize’s product. ASR/BSI, says Avilez, continues to look for new markets, especially for direct consumption sugar.

“The E.U. still remains our largest buyer; we do have a contract with Tate and Lyle, which really is a good thing because it’s a home for our raw sugar at this point. So we are basically secure in terms of where we sell the sugar; now the price is that we have to compete with the rest of the world. At the current moment we have an average price, which is also good, because it is slightly – at this moment – higher than the global price, slightly. Those are some of the positive things about the E.U. market still; the E.U. market is changing, it is looking more direct consumption sugars, brown sugars and we have to be able to respond to some of those things.”
