Police to Bring Green Gardening to South Side

Regional Commander of Eastern Division South, Howell Gillett has hit the ground running. Among the many initiatives he’s undertaking in the city, there is one with the Ministry of Agriculture to start an agriculture programme with three south side schools. Gillett, in his former capacity as O.C. in Belmopan, ran a very successful green garden initiative in the capital. He now hopes to implement a similar programme to focus on children in schools, which is likely to have ripple effects that will spill over to policing efforts in vulnerable communities.  Gillett says that the Ministry of Agriculture started an assessment on the beneficiaries of this programme.

“There are many kids who go to school without breakfast, sometimes breakfast and lunch. If we are serious about fighting crime – some naysayers would say what the police has to do with a feeding program or farming in school – but of course we have a lot to do with it. If we don’t look after these kids at this current moment, then it may well become a police issue in the very near future.  What we are going to do very shortly, there are three schools on the south side that really need some help. The Ministry of Agriculture has already gone and prepare a proposal for it. I am in dialogue with the Social Security Board to fund it and I believe it is pre-approved. So, it is just to send up the proposal and very soon we will see that come for these schools. The thing behind it is that the farming in schools will help or augment the feeding programs in the school.”
