Help Wanted for 8-Year-Old with Terrible Illness

An eight-year-old boy from Ladyville needs your help. Paul Leal has been sick for about a year. When he started throwing up blood clots, he was taken to doctors and following several tests, he was diagnosed with a likely case of Portal Hypertension with Esophageal Varices, which means that there is an increase in the blood pressure within a system of veins called the portal venous system. The condition causes extremely dilated sub-mucosal veins in the lower third of the esophagus and bleeding. Now, Leal’s family wants to take him to Merida for treatment and surgery, but they can’t afford the costs. They are now being assisted by a non-profit called PROTON that aims to help underprivileged families to raise funds for medical expenses. We spoke with Tracy Leal and PROTON about the help they need.

“He start vomit up blood with clots; but not small clots, big clots. Before I ker him, my granny say that this run inna the family, but I said this nuh right. With these big clots, I say something has to be wrong. I ker ah dah Karl Heusner and they told me they had to admit him because his blood count drop and they need to see what is wrong with him because they didn’t know either. They keep him in for a month and change and then he discharged and inna less than two months time he end up back again with the same thing.   I have to ker him somewhere where they have two specialists; someone who does surgical on children and a gastroenterologist, so they can tell me weh di happen.”

“So, when do you want to take him to Merida?”

“I heard about Paul and so seeing the diagnosis for Paul, it is a case where he cannot get treatment here in Belize. He needs surgery and the mom really can’t afford it. So, what we are trying to do is to see how we could raise funds and help the family to take the baby out to Merida to get some assistance. From what I am understanding so far, just to get to Merida and see the doctor, we are already looking at two thousand five hundred dollars and that is not even understanding as yet or hearing from the doctor what the surgery cost will be. We have a family member who will be traveling with Paul once we get the finance settled for him. If anybody has any way they want to assist, they can inbox the PROTON’s Facebook page or you can contact me at 629-2965.  We are just now trying to form a committee for Paul so that we can do the same thing. We are going to be doing some barbecue fundraising and we are going to be trying to do some events around Ladyville just to try and get some in for him. So, I am thinking that by May we should have some type of cash in hand so that we can send Paul out to have his first visit with the doctor.”
