In the City, Questions over Targeting of Businessman as Former Employee Charged with Murder

Manuel Canales

This morning, police escorted twenty-two-year-old Evyn Ardon, a Honduran national and construction worker of Antelope Street to court to be charged for murder. Forty-two-year-old Manuel Canales, who lived in the ‘London Bridges’ network located behind Antelope Street Extension, made a life for himself as a respected private contractor and raised two sons and two step-sons. But his life was tragically cut short on Holy Thursday night when, on his way home with a friend from socializing, he met up with a former employee, identified as Ardon. Canales wound up in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, stabbed in the right lower abdomen. At first, he seemed to rally after surgery, but later died. In his wake, as Aaron Humes reports, there has been an arrest, but the grieving family continues to look for answers.

“Investigation revealed that he was walking on Antelope Street, in the company of another male person when he was approached by an individual who inflicted the injury on him. Mister [Manuel] Canales passed away on the thirtieth, the following morning, sometime around six a.m. In regard to that incident, police had detained one individual and on the thirty-first, twenty-two year old Evyn Ardon – he’s a Honduran national, living in the Antelope Street Extension [area] – has been charged with the murder, the murder of Mr. [Manuel] Canales.”

But the question the naturalized Honduran-Belizean’s family is asking tonight is, why? What did Evyn Ardon, who family members said only briefly worked for murder victim Manuel Canales years ago, and who had not been reported to have any issues with him, suddenly attack him in the dead of night and ruin his family’s Easter plans?

“The man that stabbed him [used] to be his work-man, long time. And they meet up and afterward I don’t know what happened.”

“This gentleman, Mister Ardon, was this work relationship something regular or was it very infrequent?”

Voice of: Wilfredo Blanco

“No, never was frequent; they never use to be close friends or nothing like that.”

Reporter

“Did your step-father ever mention that he had any problems with this gentleman, Ardon?”

Voice of: Wilfredo Blanco

“Never. My stepfather was a cool person, always laughing, playing around. Everybody in the neighborhood knew him. He never got a problem with nobody – from home to work, or go [about] his business, wherever he wanted to go. But problems like that, never; he was never involved in problems like that. We never expect that. We mi gi plans fi go da river and spend some time, and he done buy everything we mi need fi go but we couldn’t go sake a that happen.”

According to Blanco, Canales’ companion, not identified, spoke to police. But the cops had little to say as to why Canales may have been attacked.

Reporter

“Are you able to say if police have identified any motive [as to] why is it this gentleman was attacked?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“I wouldn’t want to comment on that; [Ardon] has been charged for murder.”

Aaron Humes

“Is it known whether this person, Mr. Ardon – is it clear he knew this gentleman before? Did they have a relationship?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“I wouldn’t want to go into that aspect of the investigation either.”

Aaron Humes

“Are you aware if Mr. Canales spoke at all to police while at the hospital or on his way to the hospital?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No. He did not speak to police as far as we know.”

Aaron Humes

“So there was other additional information that would lead directly to Mr. Ardon?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Right, right. Like I said the investigation revealed he was in the company of another male person at the time of the incident.”

The stabbing unexpectedly took away a well-loved family man right as he was preparing for Easter.

Voice of: Wilfredo Blanco, Step-son

“We have to be sad, because he never mess round with anybody and we never expected it, we had plans.”

During arraignment today, Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer told Ardon that his offense is indictable and no plea would immediately be taken pending the result of a preliminary inquiry to be held later. He has been remanded to custody at the Belize Central Prison until May twenty-ninth.
