Denroy Alvarez Killed on Visit to Girlfriend; Her Ex is Sought by Police

Denroy Alvarez

Police are looking for a person of interest in the murder of Denroy Alvarez which took place within minutes of the double murder of Theresita Flowers and Delcia Blanco.  The investigations so far indicate that Alvarez’s murder was likely triggered by jealousy. He had just become involved with a female, who lives on Hondo Street, the location where he was gunned down. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

A love triangle is believed to be the motive behind the fifth murder in the Old Capital over the weekend. Thirty-one-year-old Denroy Alvarez was gunned down as he went to visit with his girlfriend at the corner of Nargusta and Hondo Streets, a stone’s throw from where he lived on Central American Boulevard. Alvarez was on a parked motorcycle when a gunman opened a barrage of bullets at him.

“Mister Alvarez was at the corner of Nargusta and Hondo Streets, waiting for his girlfriend who lives right at the corner and while he was waiting a male person came from Hondo Street and fired several shots at his direction causing his death. Thereafter the person ran to Hondo Street.”

Even as many bullets made their mark on his body, Alvarez was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but succumbed minutes later. His very close cousin, Allison Mendez, says she was one of the last persons to speak with him as he was tasked to ride her motorcycle home; ironically and unfortunately, she was also the first at the hospital to identify him.

“I heard that someone was coming in with a gunshot but where I was at the entrance I could see everything. So lo and behold, it was my cousin; he was covered down with blood. And so the police came in right after and they said, is anybody around to identify the body and I asked who it was and they said it was Denroy Alvarez. And I said, but he just went for me from work. And I went in and I saw my cousin there, helpless with gunshot wounds all over. He was already dead.”

The murder of Denroy has left his family and friends discombobulated because he was no troublemaker. He worked as a sanitation worker with the Belize City Council for years and was the father of four children. Simeon Alvarez Junior says that his brother’s life was senselessly taken.

“When I find out, it mi hard fi I believe, but I take it kinda easy cause I done know my bredda wah either dead off of woman or rum. He dah party man; he like drink. But I believe the gunman shoulda mi take it easy on my bredda and say bwai hear weh di go on—make I just bax you with this gun or shot you ina your foot and allow he make he live fi he life because even dehn shot he, he neva mi wah come back after dehn. Ih lef up to somebody else fi come back and retaliate fi he. So dehn just kill somebody weh innocent and simple ina di street. Dah my bredda, but he noh give no kinda trouble. Woman and rum…everybody know Denroy he dah the party man.”

Denroy had just recently become involved with his girlfriend, about three months ago. Police say that her ex-husband is being sought for the murder.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“So far we have interviewed several persons and the information we are gathering at this moment can lead us that it can be a possible jealousy between the ex-husband and the now deceased boyfriend.”

“Sir is that ex-husband detained or being sought?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“No, at this moment we are looking for him as we understand that he is not from this area, from Belize City.”
