‘The Red Hills’ of Cayo

The red hills of Cayo also remained red on Election Day. Both San Ignacio/Santa Elena and Benque Viejo del Carmen returned a full slate of United Democratic Party members as mayors and councilors. Earl Trapp got another term as mayor of the Twin Towns; he defeated former mayor Marconi Matus. And in Benque, Gerardo Marconi Sosa was returned over young Cristian Castellanos of the P.U.P. Returning officer for the Twin Towns, Andre Cho, delivered the results for the winners on Wednesday night.

“The winner for Mayor is Mr. Earl Trapp, four thousand six hundred and forty-two votes, for the U.D.P. The councilors are Bernadette Fernandez, four thousand seven hundred and thirty-two votes for the U.D.P.; Mark ‘O.B.’ O’Brien, for councilor, with four thousand five hundred and seventy-four votes for the U.D.P.; Miss Shary Medina, councilor, with four thousand, five hundred and thirty votes for the U.D.P.; Miss Vanessa Neal, councilor, with four thousand, four hundred and sixty-four votes for the U.D.P.; Mr. George Boiton, councilor, with four thousand, four hundred and forty-two votes for the U.D.P., and finally Mr. Nick Singh, councilor, with four thousand, two hundred and forty-three for the U.D.P. So the winners are all for the United Democratic Party.”

There are no official figures for P.U.P. votes in the Twin Towns, nor for the other mayoral candidates Roody Wade of the B.P.P. and Lupita Ferguson Orellano, an independent. The Benque U.D.P. slate overrode their P.U.P. rivals by two to one.
