Guat Soldiers Make Detention in Belize but Did They Have Authority?

In foreign affairs news, there are sketchy details about an apparent incursion by Guatemalan soldiers into Belizean territory. The question tonight is what authority they had to act. In this case, the pretext was to arrest an alleged robber. Information to News Five is that a Guatemalan money changer was robbed of a large sum of money two days ago, but it is not clear whether it was in Belize or Guatemala. But in any event, News Five has obtained video footage from our colleagues at KREM News which shows men in camouflage apparently hauling off someone whom they believe may be the perpetrator. His nationality is not known. Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington said he was not aware of the incident, and neither was C.E.O. in the Ministry of Defense, Felix Enriquez when we called him to ask. According to Enriquez, there are specific protocols for military personnel or police to approach their Belizean counterparts to have persons brought in, but he knows of no such formal request. We will continue to follow this story.
