I.C.J. the Only Way, Red or Blue

Wilfred Elrington

The resolution of the territorial dispute has been the number one foreign policy issue for successive governments of Belize.  The people, however, are yet to decide at a referendum on whether or not the claim will go before the International Court of Justice for resolution. Foreign Minister Elrington told the media today that it doesn’t matter who succeeds him, the option of taking the claim to the Hague is the only and best option for Belize.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“Whoever succeeds me as foreign minister, as far as I am aware will do nothing other than what I am doing—trying to solve the Belize-Guatemala issue by way of going to the I.C.J.  Whether it is a P.U.P. successor or a U.D.P. successor, the only path that the Government of Belize is going to pursue is to go to the I.C.J. because that is our only viable option. So if the P.U.P. were to get into office tomorrow and my good friend and colleague, Eamon Courtenay, were to become foreign minister, this is the path he would follow. Notwithstanding whatever he is saying or they are saying now before government change, that is the path that is the safest for Belize and that is the path that all his predecessors have pursued—all past P.U.P. foreign ministers: Said, Assad have followed the path that leads to the I.C.J.  And when we get into the office, we continued on that path and when we demit office, whoever takes over—whether P.U.P. or U.D.P.—will in fact pursue the same path because really that is the only and best option for us as a nation.”
