B.D.F. Driver Fined in 2013 Traffic Accident

Hubert Martinez

There was another case before the Supreme Court today. Hubert Martinez, Belize Defence Force civilian driver, avoided jail time after pleading guilty, but was assessed a total of ten thousand dollars in fines. Last week he pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter by negligence and negligent wounding in the death of three-year-old Jahston Terry.  In December 2013, Terry’s head was crushed by the vehicle Martinez was driving near the Pound Yard Bridge and his older brother five-year-old Jaheem was wounded. After hearing mitigation pleas on Martinez’s behalf, Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Williams imposed fines of two thousand five hundred dollars to be paid to the Government of Belize and a further six thousand dollars to be paid to Jahston’s family. Another one thousand five hundred dollars goes to the care of Jaheem. At the time, the mother of the two boys recounted what Jaheem told her. He said, “I hold mi lee bredda hand tight, tight. I mi di hold ih hand and the vehicle just back ahn weh. Please help ahn; I noh want mi lee bredda dead.”
