Alvaro Colom Has Few Answers for Press

Alvaro Colom

Alvaro Colom visited Belize in 2010 during the SICA summit in North Ambergris Caye, where he took over the six-month rotating presidency from Prime Minister Dean Barrow. Colom is not the first Guatemalan leader to face corruption accusations. In fact, he is the fourth in the last decade and a half, starting with Alfonso Portillo, president from 2000 to 2004, who was extradited to the United States and pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy in 2014. Colom’s immediate successor, former army general Otto Perez Molina, is headed to trial over the La Linea scandal that led to his early exit in 2016. And Jimmy Morales, who ran on an anti-corruption platform, has been accused of illegal practices, which he denies. Colom briefly answered questions from reporters on his way to be processed by police this morning.
