P.U.P. Says Keep Calm: No Belize Referendum this Year

John Briceño

As you heard earlier the P.U.P. is demanding a greater say in the education campaign on the Belize-Guatemala issue. But as to taking a formal position on the coming referendum on taking the dispute to the International Court of Justice, party leader John Briceño is less concerned. As he himself admits, the party is squarely focused on the March seventh municipal elections. But on the issue of the postponed re-registration of voters due in July, Briceño says that even before the referendum is held – and he doesn’t think it will be this year – that process is paramount.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“That is very important and it’s an issue that we’ll have to address. Right now, we have more important matters right now; our goal, our sole goal right now and attention that we have and the work we are doing is to win the municipal elections; that’s where we’re putting all the attention. And there must be a re-registration before they call the referendum. But I can assure you there’s going to be no referendum this year; the Foreign Minister is bluffing, he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about, but there’s going to be no referendum.”

“What is the party position?”

John Briceño

“When the time comes we’re going to make a decision, but right now we are looking solely at and concentrating on winning the municipal elections on March the seventh; that is what is important for us. And after that we have to ensure that there is a re-registration, and that we get people registered in the divisions where they live. Not like what has been happening in Queen’s Square and Mesopotamia and Collet and Belize Rural South and Cayo Central, Cayo West. These are the areas where we have the most abuses, where we have people registered that do not live in those divisions.”
