Reginald Garoy Shot in Belize City

Alejandro Cowo

Thirty-five-year-old taxi driver Reginald Garoy was shot to the right side of the cheek and right ring finger on Sunday night in Belize City. Garoy told police that he and another person were inside his car by the Rocky Road Bridge at the East Canal when a man walked up to him and fired several shots. At its weekly press brief today, the Police Department gave the media a statement on the gun violence in the Old Capital.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“Last night sometime after seven p.m., police from Precinct One were at the police station when a male person arrived there. He came running. His name is Reginald Garoy and he reported that he was at the corner of East Canal when he was approached by a male person who fired several shots at his direction and as a result he managed to come out of his vehicle and run through an alley and make his way to the police station. He had two apparent gunshot wounds; one was a graze to the left side of the ears and a shot to one of his fingers. He was taken to the K.H.M.H. where is still in a stable condition at the moment.  Police have canvassed the area so far and are looking for one male person who can assist us in the investigation.”

“Now, we know that Rocky Road has long been an area of gang rivalry between Berkeley and George [Street], is this a product of localized gang rivalry?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We have not established that motive but we are definitely sure that Mister Garoy has a George Street address. He was there because he is a taxi driver and had left someone there and he was having vehicle problems when he was fixing the vehicle when he approached by this male person.”

“For years you all have kept a very active patrol in the west canal area to diffuse the rivalry between the groups that are so close; is the patrol no longer active?”

 ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes there is a patrol right at that bridge that connects from east to west. At the time, the police were in another area doing another patrol. Unfortunately, they must have been monitoring the police movements. Apparently, it was just after police left that area that shooting took place. Remember that police do not remain in that area. They patrol the entire neighborhood.”
