Bike Ride Raises Thousands for F.C.D.

Twelve bikers set off on a six-day adventure across Belize and into the Chiquibul Forest Reserve last week in support of Friends for Conservation and Development.  It was organized by the European Nature Trust, which creates unique wild experiences to connect people with nature while raising funds for selected conservation organizations. According to the Trust, F.C.D. will be assisted in developing a tourism component to their work. We spoke to the two organizers today.

“The idea behind the bike ride was to collect a group of people, a group of supporters, bring them to Belize, and to show them the wonderful countryside here and the wilderness areas of Belize. Each rider was required to raise a few thousand dollars and we collect that total and make it as a donation to Friends for Conservation and Development.”

“So what is the total that you have raised?”

Sam Sutaria

“Somewhere in the region of twenty thousand dollars.”

“We’re hoping to double match the money as well; so I’ve got two individuals that can help me make it to fifty, sixty thousand dollars. And we want to try and create a tourism element to F.C.D. so we can bring people in to stay at Las Cuevas, in a reasonable amount of comfort and get connected to the nature. So I think it’s very important – the way to get people into conversation is to get them into nature – staying there overnight, listening to the work of the ecologists that are working there, and then getting involved.”

The donations will officially be made to F.C.D. in a few weeks.
