Guyana’s Opposition Leader Turns Down Nomination of CJ Kenneth Benjamin

Kenneth Benjamin

Guyana’s Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has turned down the nomination of Chief Justice of Belize Kenneth Benjamin to be Chancellor of the Judiciary of the South American country, according to Stabroek News from Guyana. A letter sent to President David Granger indicates that Jagdeo did the requisite due diligence on both the candidates for Chancellor and Chief Justice and could not agree to either appointment as he must under the Constitution of Guyana. The men were scheduled to meet to further discuss the issue after a meeting in January. Chief Justice Benjamin has a number of outstanding judgments to meet from last year, which had prompted complaint from the Bar Association. Benjamin was appointed in 2011.
