P.U.P. Chairman on DPM Faber’s Comment on Election Outcome

Henry Charles Usher

The United Democratic Party remains at the helm of central government until general elections are called.  It means that until then, all municipal bodies will be functioning under the leadership of the Barrow administration.  At the launch of the U.D.P. manifesto last Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber hinted that if cities and towns were to fall under P.U.P. rule, following the upcoming municipal elections, they would have a hard time receiving aid from central government.  Earlier today, P.U.P. Chairman Henry Charles Usher responded to the remarks by the DPM.  He pointed to Orange Walk Town as a municipality that doesn’t depend on central government to run its affairs.  Usher also says that the vindictive move only stands to affect the people who government is tasked with serving.

“I can say… Two responses to that, first of all we have seen a P.U.P. town council in Orange Walk being able to get the work done, being able to deliver for the people under a U.D.P. central government.  So the blueprint is there, it can work, you know.  It works if you are working in cooperation and in unity with the people.  If you get the people on your side, the residents of the town on your side or of the city on your side you can make city hall be effective, you can make city hall be able to provide the services that are required for the city or the town.  Secondly, I am very disappointed that Patrick Faber would say that he is going to punish anybody who votes for the P.U.P.   It’s a tried and wasted sentiment coming from the U.D.P.  We saw the prime minister travel to constituencies before the last general election and say, “Well if yo vote P.U.P. you know yo noh wahn get this from central government.”  Man they’re not punishing the P.U.P., they’re punishing the people, and that is what the U.D.P. is all about, punishing people?  Really, that’s what the deputy prime minister wants to be known for?  So I would say he needs to retract that comment and he needs to do it right away.”
