P.U.P. Mayoral Candidate Says: Win Elections Legally

Marconi Matus

During the year-long immigration hearings of the Senate Select Committee, the former director of Immigration Ruth Meighan confirmed that at least two thousand persons, who did not qualify, illegally obtained nationality before the 2012 elections.  The P.U.P. has maintained that aided by the U.D.P. politicians, these persons were able to vote in the last general elections to tip the scale.  It is against this backdrop that the P.U.P. says it is keeping an eye for any irregularity in the voters list. According to Matus, elections should be free of fraud.

“Last night, we had a meeting and we decided that we should go to the street and demonstrate our discontent. And we went on the streets. We didn’t get a permit, but we knew the law that if you stay in front, but we went to demonstrate in front of the Elections and Boundaries Office. We were moving and moving for about an hour and a half; no police came by. We were saying that these people from Elections and Boundaries did not do their jobs by inspecting if it is true that these people lived in Santa Elena.  One guy that we knew as a supporter of the United Democratic Party, one man Mister Gabino Canto, he put on Facebook about two or three days ago that he thought that the voter’s fraud was over here in Cayo and in the country of Belize. He told his people, he used to live in San Antonio, but now he lives in San Ignacio and he is saying that these people should be ashamed beucase they are religious people. You have the Cantos who are U.D.P. fanatics; you have the Cocs in San Antonio, the Juans from a farm in Georgeville; they were also on the list. To add more to it, the magistrate allowed for only the lawyer and well Alberto August was a person listening, allowed no witness, no person that we were taking to court to come. They stayed home and they won the case. So we know that it is a voter’s fraud and that is the discontent that we have.”

“So these thirty-three persons have been added to the voter’s list? They will vote on March seventh?”

Marconi Matus

“They will vote on March seventh. We want this to stop. We are asking the Prime Minister, we are asking the cabinet, we are asking everybody to stop it. Win elections legally man. Why you want to win by forgery, by putting people to vote in respective areas?”
