Plumbing at Civic ‘Most Engineered’

The spanking new Belize City Center is yet to officially open its doors to the Belizean public.  Amid controversy over the cost of the colossal structure is its plumbing.  Over the past several weeks, concerns have been raised about the integrity and efficiency of pipes and fixtures inside the building.  Critics argue that the water system is faulty and does not meet the technical specifications for an edifice of that scale.  Civil Engineer Doug Walker refutes those claims, stating on record that Civic is by far the most engineered plumbing of any building in Belize.  Architect Daniel Arguelles also spoke on the backup energy system that is also a feature of the new building.

“When it comes to plumbing, I want to say this very clearly, I do not believe there is any problem with the plumbing whatsoever.  The plumbing has been carefully designed by a professional mechanical engineer.  We have drawings, we have calculations, we have pressure tested the system and in my opinion, the plumbing is going to work very, very, very well.  Now having said that, I just want to add that it’s the most engineered plumbing in any building in the country at the moment.  So that’s my statement on the plumbing.”

“In our tour earlier, I noted that we do have a generator standby system.  It’s approximately five hundred [kilowatts] which means it can power the entire facility at full capacity.  But what that does for us is offer the opportunity for a backup system for entertainment when there is a power failure and for the hurricane preparedness in the event that the facility is used as a first responders staging area.  But the capacity can run at full for three days in a normal day tank that it comes with and we have built into the building three thousand extra gallons that we have programmed, and in our manual that we scripted for the project, or for the building, it’s to be used only when there is the approach of a hurricane.  So the scenario would be that for normal entertainment use or game play, the standby generator is available to carry through the night.  On the approach of a hurricane, the backup tanks, three thousand gallons, would be filled at that point, three days out, so to speak, and only used when a hurricane system is on the approach.  So we are fully backed up.”

The Civic was opened to the public briefly on Wednesday for a tour of the facility.
