Gwendolyn Sanchez Recognized as HelpAge Career Caregiver

HelpAge Belize, in partnership with B.E.L., recognized eighty-nine-year-old Gwendolyn Sanchez of Benbow Street with the first ever “Caregiver Achievement Award.”  The senior citizen and her husband raised her children, including two with special needs, for decades. The Help Age says that many of these caregivers go unnoticed and at times unsupported, as they take on tremendous caregiving duties. We stopped in at the award presentation.

“We are giving this award to a woman who she is eighty-nine-years-old and she has been providing care to her children; she has six children and two of her children had special needs and she herself had some disability, but even with that disability, she had the abilities to nurture her children. But not only nurture her children, but she nurtured three children who have been productive citizen within this society.”

“It is indeed a wonderful experience to be awarded such accreditation so speak to be the longest caregiver. And as was mentioned, the caregiver experience that my mom offered is a 24/7 experience and is one that is very taxing because we had three special need children, two special need children and they are quite in age. My sister would have been sixty-three years, she passed away about three years ago. My other sister she is really, really special need and she is fifty-eight. Mom cared for us from birth. So, this award is one that is really touching because many of times these services go unnoticed; even to us, we take it for granted.”

“We recognize the importance. These are individuals who go unnoticed and it also comes with a cost. Where is the support? Where is the family support? Where is the community support? Where is the support system in the government department? Yes, there exist support system within the government services, specifically the human development. But how many caregivers are aware of those services and how many caregivers can access those services.”
