Senate Turns Down Contractor General for Re-Appointment

Valerie Woods

Godwin Arzu has been in the role of Contractor General since 2009 and his current two-year term expires at the end of 2017. The government has been seeking to renew his term for another two years, but the Opposition has raised objection. While the motion was passed in the House despite the intervention of Lake Independence rep Cordel Hyde, it was withdrawn in the Senate today. Opposition Senator Valerie Woods; Business Senator Mark Lizarraga and N.G.O. Senator Osmany Salas independently found out that no annual report from Arzu’s office has been submitted since 2013, which is a violation of his terms and conditions. They each argued when the motion came up for debate that Arzu needed to fix this aspect before seeking another term.

“There is no evidence that the Contractor General has submitted the annual reports. A cursory look at the last time any such report was submitted, it appears to have been somewhere in 2013. If you look at the news archive, on September twenty-second, 2013, there was reference to a Contractor General’s report regarding one Mr. Cano, from Social Investment Fund. And that, surely for that year, would have been evidence that he was certainly complying to the requirements of his job, set out in the Act.”
