How Unions Can Find 5,000-Plus Beneficiaries

Sheila Genitty

According to Genitty, the trustees have been saying all along that they cannot ascertain the names of all the beneficiaries.  She says that one call placed in the media has resulted in over five thousand names of public officers who were affected by the wage freeze during the mid-nineties.

“We made a call out there in the media and we received names.  People contributed to our funds so we were able get legal counsel and we have a list.  So to me it seems like the unions deliberately mean to pretend that they can’t get a list of beneficiaries.  We have a list of beneficiaries right here.  So the fact that we could get this, that means that they could have done the same.”

“How many are on that list Ms. Genitty?”

“Should I tell them?  Well on this list we have five thousand, eight hundred and sixty-one people on this list.  Now maybe people have died and maybe that’s… but this is the list and this could have been…”

“How easy was that to get?”

Sheila Genitty

“Quite easy, because remember we are pensioners.  We get paid from the treasury every month, they know that we have to fill out a life certificate every May and December or something.  The last can be had, the union just means to pretend that they can’t get it because it gives them an excuse not to do anything for this group of people.”

Ruth White, Claimant

“We have concluded that the intention is that they have never had an intention to acknowledge us as beneficiaries, even though the court has ordered or stated it clearly that we are the beneficiaries.”

According to the Trust, mediation is scheduled within forty-five days of the adjudication of the most recent claim which was settled on November twenty-seventh.
