Ambassador Rowan Comes Home; Gets Big-Up in House

Rowan Garel is the new Caribbean Adventure Ambassador for the region. Garel was among several other persons shortlisted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization and after a voting period, the inspiring visually impaired youth—who is currently studying at a New York university—came out on top. His name was submitted by the Belize Tourism Board following his adventures of Climbing the Victoria Peak, Walking Across Belize and Diving the Blue Hole, all captured by this station and for which, our reporters have won several regional awards. Today, Garel touched down in Belize and was welcomed by family and friends as well as the staff at B.T.B., which was followed by a motorcade through the principal streets of the city.

“It’s really an honor to be recognized and it feels great to be back home and to bring this award.”

Duane Moody

“Did you ever think that this would have happened? We know your name is ringing in Taiwan, in Belize and now in the Caribbean.”

Rowan Garel

“I could never have imagined anything like this. I got back from Taiwan and I don’t know, I guess I thought that was it and then I found out about this award. So it is really an honor; it is so unexpected.  My advice to other people with disabilities or just people in general is you can do whatever you put your mind to. If you have a goal to achieve, if you try your best and give it your all, you can get it.”

Karen Pike, Director of Marketing, B.T.B.

“We are so excited that we had an opportunity to submit a name to the Caribbean Tourism Organization so we decided to submit Rowan’s name. We got the information to put together the whole explanation of his background and it was wonderful. So then came the task of him competing against other Caribbean ambassadors and then from there we posted on Facebook; his mom helped to post as well. We got the votes and Belize just came out and supported it. We are so excited for him; we are very proud of him and his accomplishments.”
