The Last Gasp of Petrocaribe in the House

Dean Barrow

The Government also introduced the third General Revenue Appropriation Supplementary Bill of 2017, concerning the last of the Petrocaribe funds spent by Government. After several years of riding high on the funds obtained through Venezuela to spend on everything from sports stadia to tacos and pibil, the funds slowed to a trickle and the program was briefly suspended in September due to concerns about supply from the South American country, before being re-started in October.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Madam Speaker, I rise to introduce for first reading, a Bill for an Act to appropriate further sums of money for the use of the Public Service of Belize for the financial year ending on the thirty-first of March, 2017. This is in connection with the last of the Petrocaribe appropriations, spending. This Bill has the recommendation of the Cabinet.”

Laura Longsworth, Speaker of the House

“Honorable Members, the question is that the Bill for an Act to appropriate further sums of money for the use of the Public Service of Belize for the financial year ending on the thirty-first of March, 2017, be read a first time. All those in favour, kindly say aye? (Members saying ‘Aye’) Those against, kindly say no? (Silence) I think the ayes have it.”

The Bill goes to the Finance and Economic Development Committee before returning at the next House session for second and third readings.
