CitCo Behind Again in Garbage Arrears

Darrell Bradley

Is the Belize City Council behind in almost one million dollars in payment to the Belize Waste Control? Mayor Darrell Bradley responded to that report to say that the arrear is normal at this time of year because of the payment cycle, as per the contract with the company. While the mayor didn’t have the exact figure on hand and couldn’t tell us how long behind the payments are lagging, he explained the situation:

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“Well, I don’t know that there is any truth to that. But, I know that in this particular period we always run into arrears. This is actually something that happens on a regular basis. Our contracts stipulates that we are entitled to be four weeks behind with them. Usually in the period of year where we call the slow season because we are not collecting property tax and trade license revenues to the magnitude as which we would expect in terms of our inflows, we fall behind in arrears that sometimes we are as much as in the past 16 weeks in arrears. It is fifty-odd thousand dollars that we pay them a week, so that in any given time if you are behind a significant amount of weeks, that is quite a bit of money. But again, we always maintain that the garbage services is provided and when we are in the December month, as we are now, January and February, we usually catch up.”
