Beheading Murder Co-Accused Makes Bail; Elroy Grinage Swears He Didn’t Do It

Thirty-six-year-old Elroy Grinage, a driver with the Forest Department in Belmopan, is accused of ordering and orchestrating the stabbing death and decapitation of Hilton Wade.  On December first, the Cotton Tree resident was arraigned after being charged for the criminal offenses of abetment and conspiracy to commit murder.  His so-called accomplice, Rafael Mencias, has been charged with the grisly homicide.  But tonight, Grinage, a part-time auto dealer, is out on bail, a rare occurrence for these types of crimes.  That’s because there was sufficient evidence to argue during a bail application before Justice Adolph Lucas this morning, that Grinage could not have been involved in the heinous act of killing and beheading Wade.  Senior Counsel Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley represented the accused mastermind and he told us this evening, how his client was able to secure a ten thousand dollar bond.

“He is not charged directly for, in fact, committing such a heinous crime.  Somebody else has been charged for actually committing that crime.  He was taken to the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court last Friday or Thursday and was read two very serious charges.  One is that he conspired with the accused murderer to ensure that the murder occurred and two, he went further than just conspired, but that he abetted, meaning that he actually helped the person in some way.  In this case, the charge sheet stated that he gave the person a knife and a machete for him to commit a horrible crime.  I just left the mother of Elroy, Ms. Rose, a few minutes ago and her strongest admonition to me was to please make sure I say something to the media that her son has been, to put it mildly, much maligned and accused on Facebook and social media for something for which he is one hundred percent completely, totally innocent.  So I want to clear that first part that the accusation is that he assisted, abetted, was part of facilitating this horrible crime which is the second one in about a year.  The matter of our application to the Supreme Court came in front of Judge Adolph Lucas who is the strictest of the judges and that is balanced by being a fair judge, if not the fairest of them all.  And we presented information in the Supreme Court today, to the effect of refuting and rebutting the allegations that in any kind of way Elroy Grinage did not take part in anything whatsoever.  As a matter of fact, we pointed in the grounds of the petition that he lives down the street, if you’re familiar with Cotton Tree, he lives down that street that comes off the highway and passes the school and the playground that we’re all familiar with as we pass the road there, and that Mr. Wade lives right across the highway at the corner of More Tomorrow at the entrance.  So he doesn’t need to, and the other person lives close by, he doesn’t need to transport somebody right across the road.  In fact, the person who is accused of this heinous crime owns a motorcycle and the police found blood on the motorcycle, nothing to do with Mr. Grinage at all.  So none of the allegations being made against him could stand up to elementary scrutiny.  This is not a trial, this is only an application for bail.”
