P.U.P. Rep Accuses U.D.P.’s of “Diversion;” Says His Party Made Errors Too

Julius Espat

The P.U.P. Cayo South Area Representative is not known for mincing words.  So, in true Julius Espat fashion, he says that in the face of all the chatter in the media, come the day of the next house meeting the ‘I’s will have it.

Julius Espat, Deputy Party Leader, P.U.P.

“In the House of Representatives, when the time comes for the vote, all ah dehn U.D.P. wahn get up and raise dehn hand and she “I”.  Dehn noh have a choice.”

“So you’re saying all of this is diversion and gamesmanship?”

Julius Espat

“It has always been when it comes to, when it pertains to how the people’s money is spent.  The United Democratic Party has always tried to, you call it diversion, I call it distraction, any which way, it is to take the focus off the reality.  The reality is we have to pay and in the future anybody that sits down with Lord Ashcroft or any international investor, we have to make sure that it’s not our families we hire to be able to defend us, we have to get the best legal minds in this country to make sure that our part of any agreement is for the benefit of the Belizean people and that has not happened for quite a long time.”

“Would you speak on your view of what I have called the “original sin” which is entering into this unfortunate agreement with the original owners of Universal Health Services that, you know, when they were unable to service their DFC debt it fell onto the Government of Belize?”

Julius Espat

“I can understand maybe why, [but] that doesn’t mean that I agree.  I’ll tell you why.  The initial concept was that the government at the time, under the leadership of Said Musa, had, I think, a positive proposal which was NHI.  National Health Insurance was designed in such a way so that the Belizean people can have access to health services at minimal or no cost at all.  I think that basic concept is a good one. What I am not in agreement with is that DFC kinda; em decided that dehn wahn back up the loan.  I think that was an error.  And so when the managers of Universal Health Services failed and they did fail because if they would have done good, yoh noh mih wahn default on your loan payment.  So if it was mismanagement, if it was misappropriation, I don’t care what it was, it was a problem and then you went to DFC and DFC was what, it was broke at the time I assume and so government had to then make a decision and the prime minister at the time, I assume, made a decision to be able to save the NHI program.”
