Hummingbird Highway to be Rehabilitated

And as we reported on Wednesday night, Ministry of Works, Cisco Construction and the Belmopan Police are putting in some remedial work at the bridge in Saint Margaret Village. These works are only temporary but is a part of the Hummingbird Rehabilitation Project that has started in some areas along the highway. Signage will be installed and road upgrades will take place before the rehabilitation of all one-lane bridges starts along the highway. C.E.O. Gentle explains that the Ministry of Works will be replacing that seventy-year-old one lane bridge with a two-lane bridge but that will not take place until another year or so.

“Now the bridge in question – that bridge has been there over seventy years and whilst I understand the cause of the accident and there is need for more security measures out there, we have the buses going along the highway every single day; for over ten years we have the tankers driving along the highway and we have the orange trucks – those eighteen wheelers going along the highway, as well. We know it’s a one-lane bridge and it is obvious that somebody doesn’t know – either you are distracted or you don’t know the road. Now because of the accident, and regrettably we had those accidents, we decided to do some temporary measures because as you may know, the plan is to upgrade that entire stretch of the highway and all those one lane bridges will be changed – those will be replaced with proper two lane bridges. I actually went out there myself to ensure that there was some kind of signage on the bridge itself. Before that we had reflective tape on the bridge and those were removed – people do that or kids do that. We are improving the signage, putting the sings further out that should be out there. Again, just because of the highway just being worked on, being rehabilitated those signs were not there. We have some signs that were knocked down and those are being replaced. But we are putting safety barriers on both approaches from the Belmopan and Dangriga approach. But those are only temporary measures because the bridge will be replaced.  The road is being done first and then after the road we will start replace the bridge. So far we have done one, I think it is the one in Alta Vista that has been replaced but all these one-lane bridges will be replaced But again, as you know, it takes time. First of all, it takes time to replace a bridge so I would say maybe within the next year or so we will have most of these bridges replaced because we have started already.”

I am glad they will replace the bridge. This was identified in the EIA report in Jan 2017 and is a good thing. That stretch of road was also identified as unsafe in that report, something which was not mentioned in this report.
