Dialogue Continues on Re-Introduction of OSH Bill

Floyd Neal

What’s happened to the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, which would address working conditions for all employees countrywide? In October, Prime Minister Dean Barrow stated that he had no update from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize as to whether its negotiations with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry have commenced. The re-introduction of the Bill was one of the eight demands the B.N.T.U. laid out at the time of their national strike a year ago. However, it was agreed that the N.T.U.C.B. and Chamber would take charge. The Chamber earlier this year targeted a February 2018 re-introduction of the bill and N.T.U.C.B. president Floyd Neal says they are getting ready to have that conversation.

Floyd Neal, President, National Trade Union Congress of Belize

“The Trade Union Congress needs to have consensus on what it is our positions are. We thought that in the last session of the National Assembly, the bill that was introduced captured fairly well what our positions were. That died in the last session; the Prime Minister has given an undertaking that it will come back during this current session. We still need to get together with the Chamber and agree on what will be in the bill that will be tabled. So we are committed to having that conversation and something will happen in this term.”
