Orange Walk is Tacos Central this Weekend

The seventh annual tacos festival is this weekend. On Sunday, Orange Walk will come together to celebrate the tacos. A staple of the Orange Walk food and culture scene, organizers want to highlight the importance and versatility of this quick, filling and flavor packed food eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Between four to five thousand people are expected at this year’s fest. The event kicks off early on Sunday morning at the Banquitas House of Culture. A main attraction of the festival is the tacos competition. Co-organizer of the event Dillon Jones tells us what we can expect.

“We highlight the tacos as an industry in Orange Walk. When you talk about Tacos, you talk about Orange Walk, so we are trying to make people realize the seriousness of how the people live off ah the tacos and as well as having the people recognize the tacos as a part of the culture in Orange Walk.”

“Any special kinda tacos people can expect; anything different this year?”

Dillon Jones

“Well, normally we always have new entries. Last year we had the relleno tacos, so I nuh know who wah come up with which surprise; somebody mi di tell me that deh wah bring something new. But you can expect the great tasting chicken tacos, pibil; somebody wah di bring the pibil of chicken – deh wah cook the tacos under the ground and put it in tacos form and sell it as that; tacos a la parilla – that is the one that comes with the pineapple; seafood tacos; all sorts of tacos, fry tacos, bake tacos, Johnny cake tacos – I am just kidding. We have cultural activities and of course there will be a little entry for the best tasting tacos and that person will walk away with a brand new stove and other consolation prizes for people’s participation.”

“The reigning champion of the tacos competition will be back to defend the title this year?”

Dillon Jones

“Definitely. They are back and they say they want to take home another stove but it all depends on how your hand stand with the seasoning on that day. But we have a lot of excitement. Entertainment line-up will include Youth Connection Band; Escro from Orange Walk and the pac-pac man himself, the happy cow man Mime will be in the house. Digicell will have double up and switch on that day so it is gonna be a big event and mostly people focus.”

“For people who are interested, if there is a tacos who would like to participate, do you have to register or sign up?”

Dillon Jones

“Yes. You register – you pay a slight fee for the tent or the space and you get a whole crate of Quality Poultry Chicken, so it is a win-win situation for the vendors. We have, up to now; we have about 20 vendors registered. Last year we had about twenty eight vendors, so we will try to see how much we will have this year.”
