Armenia Couple Charged in Carlos Navarijo Murder

Jose Valladarez

Late this evening in Belmopan, police formally charged an Armenia couple for the murder of twenty-nine-year-old Carlos Humberto Navarijo Albeño. Jose Valladarez and his common-law-wife, Amelia Garrido, were processed for the murder. Valladarez is charged for murder while Gariddo is charged for abetment to commit murder. The duo, along with a third person, was being held since Tuesday following the discovery of Navarijo’s body near a garbage site off the Hummingbird Highway. Valladarez was apparently known to the deceased. And while the motive is yet to be established, it is now believed that it may be drug related. The murder weapon, a sixteen gauge shotgun was recovered by police. Today, at a press brief, police provided some details of the murder.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“The only major crime recorded was one murder in Armenia which took place or for which the police were called to the scene on Monday last.  Sometime around five p.m., police responded to an information and discovered the body of Carlos Navarijo in an advanced state of decomposition in a feeder road just outside of Armenia Village.  Upon inspection of the body, it was observed [that it had] two gunshot type injuries, one to the left knee and one to the chest area.  Navarijo was last seen alive on Friday, November tenth.  Police have since detained three persons, one of whom will be charged shortly for murder.  Also, on yesterday’s date Dangriga police responded to information of a body on the beach in the bar mouth area of Dangriga Town, where the body of Howard Nicholson was found.  No sign of physical injury was observed on his body, so that is awaiting a post mortem examination.”

“In respect of the Armenia murder, would you be able to confirm whether there are indeed three persons in police custody, including a female?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes it is.”

“And would you be able to confirm as well that the motive for this murder may perhaps be drug related?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“There are some information down that line, but the charges definitely will be murder, not anything related to drugs.”

Reporter

“Now in terms of the motive for the gentleman’s death, has that been established?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No, but the information was followed and that was a part of the information that was given to the police.”

Reporter

“Okay sir, now we had received credible information about that which said that he had engaged in some type of, they had a Mayan artifact which is illegal, but he and one of the suspects had joint possession of a Mayan artifact and he in fact sold it but did not share the proceeds as expected, with his accomplice, quote, unquote.  Have you all received anything on that?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No.  No such information was received by the police.”
