NICH “Snitched” on Yhony Rosado’s Taxes

Businessman Yhony Rosado is recognized in the tourism industry for pioneering cave-tubing activities at Nohoch Che’en.  He is also an outspoken social activist who has stood up to the government whenever he has felt jilted by the so-called system.  His latest fight is with the Department of General Sales Tax.  The Commissioner of GST has billed him a whopping six hundred and ninety thousand dollars in unpaid taxes, monies that have reportedly accrued over a nine-year period.  Despite the massive invoice, Rosado says he has always been compliant in paying his just share of money to government.  Today, he stopped by our studio to fully explain the origin of his present financial woes with the revenue collecting agency.  According to the tour operator, his troubles with the GST Department are the result of the National Institute of Culture and History, NICH, surrendering third party financial information on without getting his consent prior to submission.  Rosado argues that the manner in which he was served the request for payment was less than professional, since he was never contacted prior to receiving the statement.

Yhony Rosado, Tour Operator,

“The accountants and the attorneys have found out on this piece of paper that the information that they have gathered, GST, is from NICH.  NICH is the third business partner of ours.  I get guests, we go to Nohoch Che’en and we pay an entrance fee of ten dollars.  So NICH, many years ago, had given me a credit and now, remember, I’m an executive of the federation, FECTAB, so I don’t know.  When you get credit you seem to be a good businessman or a good person, so they call you and give you credit, not knowing that the same institution that gives me credit is going to betray or send in my information to the GST without my knowledge.  And so what happened to us, if it’s on a cruise ship day and we have, my president Major Tom or my friends [at] Extreme, there are many companies, say, “Yhony, I have twenty people, ah wahn go da cave but put it pan yo bill and then later on ah wahn pay you.”  No problem, because I was the only one because they cut me off last year, I was the only one getting credit so I put a lot of our guests, or the friends’ guests.  They just give me guests, they collect the money and we take them through there.  It has never been a problem, not for me, not for GST, not for NICH, not for anyone because I’ve paid.  NICH has given information to the GST without my knowledge and that is the confusion why they are charging me for every person.”

  1. Concern says:

Seems the GST is on a rampage and desperate for money. Similar cases here in the North to business owners and far more abuses is being done to the Mennonite Community where a community member had to pay GST bills in excess of $100,000.00. Especially employees of the GST department in Orange Walk are taking advantage of the situation and making big hustle. What I see unfair and unjust is that these Mennonites of Little Belize and Shipyard the Government don’t provide any health clinic, Schools, road maintenance, road light or any such direct benefit as they do it themselves. In addition to paying these high GST bills they are yearly slap with thousands of dollars with Land rent which they pay promptly.

It would be interesting to have an investigation on this and question the persons incharge of these matters of unfair and prejudice.
