Does Established Organization have “Squatter’s Rights?”

Valerie Richardson

Richardson says she has so far failed to get the ear of either Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley or City Administrator Candice Miller, not to mention Traffic Manager Kevan Jenkins. Her request is for special permit to park between normal working hours in front of Canada House, which she serves as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping war veterans and widows of veterans. On News Five’s visit to the area this afternoon, we saw no less than six vehicles illegally parked on the left-hand side and one parked in front of Canada House itself, and there were no signs of tickets on the windshields of any of them. Richardson told us she will not give up her “squatters’ rights” in the area.

“I just want to make a plea to the Belize City Council to give the League an ‘ease’ for a parking space; we are doing this in honor of the World War widows and veterans whom the League assists. And I would like to know – I’m not an attorney, but considering the length of time the League has been there, doesn’t that come under something like squatters’ rights or something? Don’t we have a right to park there, considering it’s a non-profit organization and the League has been using that spot for over fifty years? Doesn’t that come under something similar to squatters’ rights?”

We reached Jenkins this afternoon but he was in a meeting and did not offer comments. Richardson says the League would welcome assistance to fix the fence adjacent to the office which might allow her to park inside. The League’s official van is down for repairs at this time.
