The Drums Will Sound in B.I.L.’s P.G. Sporting Complex this Weekend

There’s a massive pre-Battle of the Drums event scheduled to kick off at the Punta Gorda Multipurpose Complex shortly.  After two years of work, the facility is finally completed and ready for use.  On Thursday, an extensive site visit was conducted with the Local Sports Council Management Committee to certify that the facility is ready to host the mega-event.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The Punta Gorda Multipurpose Sporting Complex has been completed in time to host the annual Battle of the Drums Competition.  Constructed by Belize Infrastructure Limited, the facility will be used for cultural, entertainment and sporting activities.  Among the building’s many features is a FIBA certified court.  It also carries a seating capacity of up to twelve hundred persons.  Punta Gorda Mayor Fern Gutierrez spoke of the accomplishment.

“This means that we have a house for sporting activities, that we now have a home for cultural activities, like Queen of the Bay.  But most importantly, that we have a wonderful state of the art hurricane shelter as well for the entire community.  So today is a joyous opportunity, a moment that we celebrate a huge accomplishment, thanks to the Government of Belize.”

The new building also includes locker rooms, events changing rooms, offices, concession spaces, et cetera.  It comes in at a price tag of a little under three and a half million dollars.  Additional funds have been set aside for the completion of landfill, drainage and civil works.  Minister of Youth and Sports Patrick Faber ways the building will be inaugurated on November seventeenth.

“We have put off the official opening for next week Friday, the seventeenth, at ten a.m.  But from the pictures that I have seen and from the background knowledge that I got six months or so ago, it’s a spectacular facility.  There’s the state-of-the-art wooden court that is of course professional level and the amenities there, in fact, are a hundred times better than what was there some months ago, a year or two ago when, you know the condition of the former civic center there in Punta Gorda.”

According to Christy Mastry, Chief Executive Officer of BIL, the multipurpose complex more than lives up to its name.

“So we’re standing today in the Punta Gorda Multipurpose facility and what’s great about using the term multipurpose is that it’s so very appropriate on this weekend and next weekend because the first event, even though we’re looking at what’s wonderfully polished and FIBA approved sports court in the background, the first even for which it will be used is the Battle of the Drums which is one of the biggest cultural events probably even countrywide now, I mean it really attracts, you know, all different bands and all different groups coming regionally.  So we’re excited because what’s happening this weekend is that there’s going to be a soft opening really, for this event and they’re going to be doing festivities in here tomorrow Friday and on Saturday is the official Battle of the Drums.  We really wanted to allow them to use this facility in 2017 as we’ve displaced them for almost two years now.”
