More than 30 Women Arrested in Human Trafficking Ring in San Pedro

A major sting operation in Honduras last week, resulted in the arrest of Denia Suyapa Ochoa, believed to be the ringleader in a human trafficking organization that extends to Belize.  She is the Ministry of Health employee in San Pedro Sula, Honduras who is accused of smuggling as many as seventy young women into the country to work as waitresses at local bars in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.  According to officials, Ochoa orchestrated a transportation route by ferrying her victims from the second largest city in Honduras to Guatemala, before landing them in Belize.  In the wake of Ochoa’s arrest, the Belize Police Department has been working closely with its Central American counterpart, rounding up approximately thirty-two young women of Honduran and Salvadoran nationalities.  Those girls have been in the country illegally and their status remains a matter for the Immigration Department.  This morning, Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo provided an update from the perspective of law enforcement.
