Guats Protested B.D.F. Documentary?

Wilfred Elrington

Turning to another matter of national interest….Belize has, for now, raised no objections to Guatemala once again promoting its unfounded claim with an offensive map purporting to include our territory, ahead of the March eighteenth, 2018 referendum on going to the International Court of Justice. But Guatemala, it appears, is fairly easily offended by Belizean activity, even those of a harmless kind. Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington, responding to a question about whether a change in the Maritime Areas Act would provoke Guatemala, cited their recent protest of a documentary about the Belize Defence Force, which he says shows that influence at the decision-making level can be easy to exert.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“Most of what we do at Governmental level tends to offend the [Guatemalan] government. In other words, recently we did a documentary where we were having our soldiers explain the process of patrolling along the border, and the Guatemalans took exception to it; they actually sent us a protest note. So that most of what we do officially tends to attract some negative response from them, so that whatever we do, we think about it very, very carefully. Because there are – just like how there are in Belize irresponsible elements – you can have irresponsible elements in Guatemala as well, and irresponsible elements can cause people and societies to be hurt.”

Supporting his usual cautious view, Elrington also cited the belligerent rhetoric between North Korea and the United States over the former’s development of nuclear weapons as an example of what happens when confrontation becomes a zero-sum game.

Look, maybe it is good for Belize and Guatemalans to be one Country. Let’s give it a try, why not?
